What GOTS Certified Really Means for Your Hoodie
GOTS, no azo dyes, no DMFA, no PFAS, no BPA — here is what those certifications actually mean and why Beewear made them non-negotiable.
What GOTS Certified Really Means for Your Hoodie
Most brands throw certifications on a product page and move on. A logo, a badge, a line in the fine print. You are supposed to feel good about it and not ask too many questions.
We would rather you ask the questions.
Here is what every certification on a Beewear hoodie actually means — and why we made each one a hard requirement before a single stitch was sewn.
GOTS Certified: The One That Covers Everything
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is widely considered the most rigorous organic textile certification in the world, and for good reason — it does not just look at the fibre. It covers the entire supply chain, from the farm where the cotton is grown all the way to the finished garment.
To carry the GOTS label, a product must meet strict requirements at every stage:
- The fibre must be certified organic — grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds
- The processing must use only approved dyes and chemicals — a long list of harmful substances is explicitly prohibited
- The workers must be treated fairly — GOTS includes social criteria covering wages, working hours, and safe conditions
- The facility must be independently audited — not self-reported, not a questionnaire, an actual third-party inspection
Our Signature Hoodie Black N' Orange is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton fleece. That single certification covers more ground than most brands' entire sustainability pages.
No Azo Dyes: Why the Colour Matters
Azo dyes are synthetic dyes used widely in the textile industry because they are cheap and produce vivid, consistent colour. They are also a problem.
Under certain conditions — including contact with skin and sweat — some azo dyes can break down and release aromatic amines, a class of compounds that includes known carcinogens. The European Union has restricted the use of certain azo dyes in textiles for this reason. Many countries have followed.
None of our fabrics use azo dyes. The black in our hoodies, the orange in our Signature colourway, the navy in our Classic — all achieved without them. It takes more care to source dyes that perform at the same level without the shortcuts, but it is not negotiable for us.
You wear this against your skin for hours at a time. The dye matters.
No DMFA: The Chemical You Have Never Heard Of
DMFA — dimethylformamide — is a solvent used in some textile manufacturing processes, particularly in the production of synthetic fibres and certain coatings. It is classified as a reproductive toxin and is harmful through skin absorption.
It is not something most people think to ask about. It does not show up on a hangtag. But it can be present in finished garments if the manufacturing process is not carefully controlled.
Our fabrics are DMFA-free. This is a requirement we place on our supply chain partners, not an afterthought.
No PFAS: The Forever Chemicals
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a group of synthetic chemicals used in textiles for water resistance, stain resistance, and wrinkle resistance. They are called "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment or in the human body.
PFAS have been linked to a range of health concerns including immune system disruption, thyroid issues, and certain cancers. They accumulate over time. They are found in drinking water, soil, and human blood samples around the world — largely because of industrial and consumer product use.
A lot of performance and outdoor apparel uses PFAS-based treatments. We do not. Our hoodies are not treated with PFAS. They are not water-resistant in the technical sense — they are hoodies, not rain jackets — but they are also not leaching chemicals into your body or the water supply when they are washed.
No BPA: Even in the Details
BPA — bisphenol A — is a chemical used in some plastics and resins, including certain textile coatings, prints, and hardware. It is an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can interfere with hormonal systems in the body.
BPA-free is a standard you see on water bottles and food containers. It is less commonly discussed in clothing, but it applies there too — particularly in screen prints, coatings, and any plastic components like drawcord tips or zipper pulls.
Our hoodies are BPA-free throughout. Every component, not just the fabric.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Here is the thing about certifications: they only mean something if the brand actually required them before production, not after.
A lot of "sustainable" fashion works backwards. A brand produces a garment, then looks for a certification that fits what they already made. The certification becomes marketing, not a standard.
We built our requirements into the sourcing process. Before we chose our fabric suppliers, before we finalized our manufacturing partners, these were the criteria on the table. GOTS certified. No azo dyes. No DMFA. No PFAS. No BPA. Non-negotiable.
That is why our Signature Hoodie costs $170 CAD and not $60. The fabric costs more. The certified supply chain costs more. The independent audits cost more. We absorb as much of that as we can and pass on what we have to.
You are not paying for a logo. You are paying for what is not in the hoodie.
The Pre-Sale Connection
We sell on pre-sale — every hoodie is made to order, with a 4–8 week production window. This is part of the same philosophy.
Mass production and fast fashion go hand in hand. When you are producing tens of thousands of units speculatively, cost pressure is enormous. Corners get cut. Certifications get dropped. Cheaper dyes get used.
When we produce exactly what is ordered and nothing more, we can maintain tighter control over every step. We know which facility is making each batch. We can verify the certifications are current. We are not scrambling to fill a warehouse.
Slower is cleaner. That is the trade-off we made, and we think it is the right one.
What This Means for You
When you buy a Beewear hoodie, you are getting:
- GOTS certified organic cotton (Signature Hoodie) — grown and processed without synthetic pesticides, with fair labour standards throughout the supply chain
- No azo dyes — colour that does not carry carcinogenic breakdown risk
- No DMFA — no reproductive toxins in the manufacturing process
- No PFAS — no forever chemicals in the fabric or finish
- No BPA — clean throughout, including hardware and prints
This is not a complete list of everything we care about. It is the floor. The minimum standard we hold ourselves to before anything goes into production.
If you have questions about our certifications, our supply chain, or anything else about how our hoodies are made — reach out. We would rather have the conversation than put a badge on a page and hope you do not look too closely.
